World Habitat Day: Oct. 5, 2009

The first Monday of every October is designated as World Habitat Day – a day to call worldwide attention to the dire need for affordable housing for all.

According to the United Nations, more than 100 million people in the world today are homeless. Millions more face a severe housing problem-living without adequate sanitation, with irregular or no electricity supply and without adequate security. Habitat for Humanity would need to build 2,000,000 homes per year for the next fifty years to solve the present worldwide housing crisis. Due to growth trends, at the end of those fifty years, there would still be a need for another 1 billion houses.

Raising awareness and advocating for change are the first steps toward transforming systems that perpetuate the global plague of poverty housing. World Habitat Day serves as an important reminder that everyone must unite to ensure that everyone has a safe, decent place to call home.

World Habitat Day

Looking back and forging ahead

United Way of Alamance County in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Alamance County has finished its 3rd Habitat Blitz Build house. Construction began August 24th and ended September 4th 2009.

This is the 1st home of this soon to be 18 home Habitat subdivision. Volunteers have done everything from driving roofing nails and hammering away at siding to hanging sheet rock and painting.  Kimberlee Ann Pinnix and her daughter Cheyann will become proud new Habitat Homeowners as a result of everyone's support and efforts for this event.

If you are interested in finding out about other volunteer opportunities, please visit United Way of Alamance County  or contact Habitat For Humanity of Alamance County at 336-222-8191.
