Habitat Philosophy

Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing ministry committed to building simple, decent and affordable houses in partnership with God's people in need. The goal of Habitat for Humanity International is to eliminate poverty housing worldwide.

Habitat for Humanity of Alamance County is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat for Humanity is not a charity or "give-away" program.

We offer families in need a "hand-up not a hand-out".

Families who qualify purchase their houses at cost with a 20 year, interest-free mortgage. Homeowners' house payments are used to build more Habitat houses. Since houses are built using volunteer labor and donated materials (when available), the cost of a Habitat house is lower than the cost of a traditionally built house.

The Habitat program is not easy, nor is it quick. You must strongly desire to improve your living situation and be willing to work hard to achieve your dream of homeownership.

We want you to understand the application process and how the Habitat program works so we invite you to please review the "Applicant Requirements".

If you are interested in applying for the Habitat for Humanity program in Alamance County, please complete the Habitat Homeownership Application & mail it back to;

YOU PROMISE TO:

• Pay a $300 downpayment.

• Work the required "Sweat Equity" hours (200 hr./ adult applicant) in the Habitat program, completing 100 hours/adult within 9 months of acceptance into the Habitat program.  Please review "Principles of Sweat Equity".

• Payoff bad debt and not take on or create any new debt.

WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR REQUIRED HOURS AND

YOUR HOUSE IS BUlLT, YOU WILL:

  • Pay appxmtly. $875 in closing costs and down payment
  • Have first month's mortgage payment in savings
  • Sign legal documents for homeownership

This process may take a considerable amount of time.  Be patient and call the Habitat office at 336-222-8191 if you have any questions or concerns.

Moving In and Beyond

After you have finished the ten (10) steps, we will gather to dedicate your new house. You will want to invite friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors to this very special event. The dedication service is not the end of your journey, but a new beginning in your life.

Your responsibilities as a Habitat for Humanity homeowner are to:

  1. Make your mortgage payments on time every month.
  2. Keep your house clean inside and out.
  3. Be a good neighbor and treat others as you would like to be treated.
  4. Refer other families to the Habitat for Humanity program.
  5. Attend Habitat meetings and functions.
  6. Volunteer for other families as others have volunteered to help you.

You have been Blessed, please pass it on.
